Provenance :
Private collection, France
History :
This painting of royal elephants near the citadel of Hué, was executed by Jouve directly on the motif, in May 1923.
Jouve, winner of a grant from the Indochina government in 1921, made a long eleven-month trip to the Far East the following year. Jouve left France in early September 1922, returning in July 1923.
This trip, which left a lasting impression on his work, took him to Ceylon, Annam, the former French Indochina and Angkor, where he stayed for 3 months. Jouve then moved on to Tonkin, then the city of Yun Nan in the Chinese empire. On the way back, he will spend a month in Hué, the imperial city where our painting was made, then cross Annam again, stop in the English South Indies, then Ceylon again, before returning to France.
